Mounts & Flight

Getting around Perilous Legends - on the ground, across the water, and through the air.

Overview

Perilous Legends gives you three ways to travel: ordinary and exotic ground mounts, an ethereal dolphin for crossing water, and a flying Garuda that carries you over the world from above. Some mounts are pure transport with a rare look; others are genuine war-beasts you tame and fight alongside.

Everything you would expect from Ultima Online is here too - horses, llamas, ostards, ethereal mounts - so this page focuses on what is new and unusual to the shard.

Ground Mounts

Beyond the standard stable of horses and pack animals, the shard has a set of exotic mounts. Some are simply striking skins on ordinary steeds - the Clydesdale, for instance, is a rare-looking draft horse with the stats and one-slot control cost of a plain horse, so it is a showpiece, not a war-mount. Others are unusual rides in their own right: the antlered Runestag, the Bake-Kitsune fox, a Serpentine steed, and a Chocobo that even plays its own riding tune while you are in the saddle.

The mounts that matter in a fight are the War Mounts, covered next.

Elemental Steeds

The War Mounts are full combat pets that you also ride - a war-mount and a battle companion in one. Each fights with attacks to match its nature:

The War Mounts
SteedFights with
Tide SteedIcy breath, freezing area spells, and a chance to lock a target in ice.
Flame SteedFire breath, a fire-storm cast, and burning melee hits.
Earth SteedPoison breath and crushing earth attacks.
Storm SteedEnergy-bolt breath, an energy aura, and armor-piercing strikes.
Undead SteedDrains life, spreads disease, and can freeze an enemy with fear.

These are serious pets. The ridable War Mounts come close to rivaling the strongest pets on the server while also being ridable, and each takes five control slots plus 110 Animal Taming to command, so taming one is a real investment.

Exact stats and taming requirements are tuned in-game and may be rebalanced; the descriptions here are how each steed plays, not a locked stat block. See Taming & Pets for the mechanics of controlling and leveling a pet, and Pet Equipment for gearing one.

Pack Mounts

Not every mount is for speed. Pack mounts - the pack horse and pack llama - are for hauling, and they carry trade packs in their saddlebags. They follow you at a normal pace on their own, but the moment you climb on they are locked to a walk. That walk-lock also applies whenever you carry a trade pack or a caught sport-fish while mounted: heavy cargo means you move at walking speed no matter what you are riding. It is the price of carrying a fortune across the map.

The Dolphin

Water is no longer a wall. The ethereal dolphin is a sea-mount you ride out onto the ocean: while you are on it, water tiles become passable, so you swim across open water where a horse would stop dead at the shoreline. Summon it from its statuette while facing open water and it seats you on the waves; dismount and it sets you back on solid ground.

It is a genuine trophy - an Ultra Rare drop from Dolphins - and it turns up in one of six colors, so no two riders' dolphins look quite alike. It costs no control slots and is blessed, so it is safe to carry.

Flight & the Garuda

The rarest way to travel is up. The Garuda - a great winged mount with a true flying animation - is the shard's flying mount. Flight is not free-roaming, though: it works like an air service between fixed hubs. You visit a Flight Master, pick a destination from the menu, pay a gold fee that scales with the distance, and the Garuda glides you there along a set route, climbing to cruising height and crossing any terrain below. You are invulnerable while airborne, the camera pulls back for the view, and you set down beside the Flight Master at the far end.

Every hub is reachable from the start, so it is a fast way to cross the map once you know where the Flight Masters stand. A few rules apply before you can take off:

The Garuda is also the trophy of hamlet warfare: the guildmaster of a guild that controls a hamlet is granted a solid ethereal Garuda to ride for as long as the guild holds the ground. It is the same striking mount, handed to whoever earns the right to it by force.
