Monsters & Bestiary
Over a thousand creatures roam the shard, from stock dragons to a shelf of custom imports you won't find anywhere else.
Overview
The Perilous Legends bestiary is big and it is not all stock. Alongside the familiar Ultima Online line-up of dragons, ogres, and skeletons sits a long list of custom-imported creatures - modern beasts, elementals, and exotic mounts the shard pulled in specifically. All told the roster runs to more than 1,300 creatures across roughly 331 unique bodies.
Loot follows the same rule everywhere: a creature's difficulty is its maximum Hit Points, and its Hit Points set its reward tier. So the bestiary and the loot ladder are really the same map - the scarier the thing, the better it pays. The apex of that ladder gets its own page: Bosses & Champions.
The Mob Gallery
You do not have to hunt blind. The shard keeps an online Mob Gallery - a browsable bestiary with a rendered picture of nearly every creature, grouped by the class that fights them best and sorted A to Z. It is the fastest way to see what a creature looks like before you meet it.
Browse it here: http://192.168.2.49:8765/mob-gallery/
The bestiary is a living list. Creatures get added and tuned over time, so treat the Mob Gallery as the current source of truth for the roster and check it in-game for exact stats.
Custom Creatures
The custom imports are where the shard's bestiary gets its own flavour. Because the client runs modern animation data, creatures that never existed in the classic-era game render perfectly here. A sampling of what has been brought in:
| Group | Creatures |
|---|---|
| Modern beasts | Dragon Turtle (a genuine boss), Manticore, Air Titan, Mammoth, Panda, Siege Elephant |
| Elementals & horrors | Medusa Jelly, beholders (large, eye of the deep, green, undead), mutant plants |
| Exotic mounts | Elemental steeds, undead steed, Anzu, Triceratops, Boura, Clydesdale, Runestag, Chocobo, Bake-Kitsune |
| Sea & sky | Rideable dolphin, the Leviathan sea boss, Giant Coconut Crab, wild Garuda |
A couple worth calling out. The Medusa Jelly is not a boss - it is a mid-tier creature, but it spits a glob of venom across the gap that lands greater poison, so it fights above its health bar; watch your line of sight and don't stand still. The beholders come in a whole family, from the small green one up to the boss-tier Large Beholder that throws fire and fear. And plenty of these creatures are tameable or rideable rather than just things to kill - see Taming & Pets for which ones you can bring home.
Combat Mounts & Sea Life
Some of the most striking imports are the ones you ride. The elemental steeds - Tide, Flame, Earth, and Storm - are full combat mounts, not decorations: each carries a breath weapon re-skinned to its element and its own area spells, roughly on par with a young Stygian dragon (around 740 hit points). The undead steed is cut from the same cloth, trading the breath for life drain, disease, and a fear on its bite. Rarer skins like the Clydesdale and oddities like the Runestag and the Chocobo (which plays its own theme while you ride it) round out the stable.
Out on the water, the rideable dolphin lets you swim the open ocean as a sea-mount instead of taking a boat, while the Leviathan lurks as a genuine sea boss - see Bosses & Champions.
How They Render
A quick note for the curious. The shard's custom creatures draw from modern UOP animation data rather than the old static art tiles, which is exactly why beasts from far newer eras of the game render perfectly here: give the client the animation and the creature simply appears. That is how a classic-era rules set ends up with dragon turtles, elemental steeds, and beholders walking around. Where a body has no unique art, the client falls back to a stand-in exactly as it does in the game, so the Mob Gallery pictures match what you see in-world.
Tips
- Scout with the Mob Gallery before you hunt - know the face before you meet it.
- Difficulty is Hit Points. A deeper health bar means a tougher fight and a richer drop.
- Some mid-tier creatures punch above their HP - the Medusa Jelly's ranged poison and the beholders' spells make them nastier than the bar suggests.
- Many custom imports are tameable or rideable, not just kill fodder - check Taming & Pets.
- The elemental and undead steeds are real combat mounts with breath weapons and area effects, not show ponies.
- The nastiest creatures are the bosses and champions - read Bosses & Champions before you take one on.
