Fishing
Cast for fish, nets, maps and messages in bottles, and hook the big ones when the gulls gather.
Overview
Fishing feeds the sea economy: ordinary fish, deep-water treasure, and the shard's Sportfishing system with its reel fights and Fishmonger payouts.
What It Does
- Fish spots hold 5 to 15 fish and refill in 10 to 20 minutes; a cast takes 8 seconds.
- Below 75 skill you only gain in shallow water; at 75 and above only in deep water.
- Deep water specials by skill: fishing nets from 80, treasure maps from 90, messages in bottles from 100 (about 3% per cast), big fish from 80, rare fish about 1% anywhere.
- A failed cast can snap the pole, less often as skill rises.
On Perilous Legends
- Sport fish: 2% on any successful catch. During a Feeding Frenzy (seagulls circling, 30 minutes, 50-tile radius) every cast has a 5% hook chance and the fish is one of five tiers; then you fight it on the reel. You wear the catch like a trade pack, one at a time.
- Sport fishing poles are carpentry crafts; better woods cast faster (10 seconds for plain wood down to 3 for Perilwood).
- Fishmongers pay gold by fish level, or a matching treasure chest; the Tortuga Master Fishmonger pays double 10% of the time.
- Message-in-a-bottle chests roll level 1 to 5 regardless of the bottle.
- The Mariner Quartermaster has fishing quests and sells a Fishing power scroll. A Fishing Boat (Harbormaster) holds four sport fish.
- Leaderboards: Master Angler, Trophy Fisher, SOS hunter.
The Barnacled Chest
Somewhere under the swells there are chests the sea has been keeping. A barnacled chest is the rarest thing an ordinary line will ever bring up, and most anglers will fish a lifetime without seeing one.
- Only a grandmaster angler hooks one, and only from the deck of a ship. No cast made from shore will ever raise one, however long you stand there.
- Every point of Fishing past grandmaster makes one a little likelier, so the best anglers on the water find them soonest.
- It comes up locked, and the sea does not hand over the key. It takes a lockpicker of 110 Lockpicking or better to open one, so bring a friend if that is not you.
- Inside: a level 7 treasure map, a heavy purse of gold, a stack of class coins of a single kind, and finds from the rare, ultra rare and mythical pools together. On the rarest of the rare, something out of the Unique pool has been known to be wedged in the bottom.
Training It
Fish shallow to 75, then deep. Fishermen teach it.
