Lawless Zones

Where the reputation rules switch off - everyone is grey, anyone can attack anyone, and a kill costs the killer nothing.

Overview

A lawless zone is exactly what it sounds like: a place where the reputation system does not apply. Step into one and you are automatically flagged grey to everyone else, anyone can attack you (and you them) freely, and killing another player there does not stain the killer's record. It is the shard's anything-goes ground, and it is where PvP runs hottest.

The Rules

Three things change the moment you enter a lawless zone:

What "lawless" actually does
RuleWhat it means
Everyone is auto-greyYou are flagged grey - freely attackable - but not criminal. It is a zone-wide override, no matter your status outside.
No murder countsKilling another player inside a lawless zone does not add to the killer's murder count. The kill is free on their reputation.
Everything else is normalStandard PvP otherwise - full damage, full loot on the corpse, no special protection. Lawless makes it more permissive, not safer.

Because everyone is grey to everyone, you can read the rule right off the screen: if the people around you are all flagged grey, you are on lawless ground and no one owes anyone restraint.

Where It Applies

Two parts of the world are lawless:

Everywhere else - the towns, the overland routes between hubs, and the dungeons (Deceit, Despise, Destard) - is not lawless. Those run the shard's normal Felucca-style rules, including full murder counts for killing a player. Do not carry lawless assumptions onto the mainland or into a dungeon; a kill on land is a very different thing from a kill at sea.

Lawless is a flag the shard applies to a whole zone, and it can add more later. Right now the lawless ground is the ocean and Tortuga. If a dungeon or other area is ever flagged lawless in future content, it will read the same way - everyone in it goes grey - so trust what your screen shows you over any assumption.

Two PvP Regimes

The upshot is that PL has two different PvP climates, and they exist on purpose:

What It Means for You

Know which climate you are standing in before you make a decision. A trade pack hauler crossing overland is protected by the fact that ambushing them costs a murder count; that same hauler on a ship, or anywhere on the ocean, is fair game for free. If you are the one doing the hunting, the sea and Tortuga are where you can do it without consequences to your reputation. If you are the one being hunted, treat every tile of water as hostile.

And remember the flip side of the reputation rules, which never changes: murder counts are only ever given for killing players, and never more than one per kill. Lawless zones simply switch that count off entirely. The full breakdown is on Murder & Reputation.
