Flight Paths

How you cross the world now that the gates are gone - overland, by sea, by Gate Travel, and on the Flight Paths that link every city.

Overview

Getting around Perilous Legends is overland, by sea, by the Gate Travel spell, and on the Flight Paths that run between the cities. There is no public moongate network and there is no Recall - both were lost in the war that shaped the world. Read the two things below, Gate Travel and the Flight Paths, and you will always have a way to where you are going.

The Arcane Cataclysm

The last great war - the Mages' War - ended not with a victor but with a wound in the world. In its final hours the magi turned their own power loose, and the Arcane Cataclysm tore the arcane travel network apart. The public moongates that once linked the cities were destroyed, and the Recall magic that let a mage flick home in an instant no longer answers. What survived is quieter and harder: you walk, you sail, you open a gate by hand, or you buy passage on a Flight Path.

Gate Travel

The one travel spell the world kept is Gate Travel. On Perilous Legends it is a Circle 4 spell with an extended cast time - slower and more deliberate than the old instant magic, and something to plan around rather than lean on in a fight. Recall has been removed entirely; cast it and nothing happens.

Gate Travel itself works the way you would expect. Mark a rune at a spot you want to return to, keep your runes in a runebook, then cast Gate Travel on the rune to open a two-way gate your whole group can step through. It is the backbone of quick travel once you, or a friend, have the Magery for it.

Two limits are built into Gate Travel on purpose:

Hauling a trade pack blocks arcane travel too. A loaded pack locks you out of gates and flight and forces you overland on foot or at reduced mounted speed - that overland risk is the whole tension of the trade run.

Flight Paths & Stables

With the moongates gone, the reliable way to cross the map between cities is the Flight Paths. Every city has a Flight Stable. Talk to the stable's flight master, buy a ticket to another city, and you are flown straight there - no rune, no Magery, no walking the roads between. It is the closest thing the world still has to the old free city-to-city travel, and it is open to everyone.

Use the Flight Paths to hop between the great cities to bank, shop, pick up a trade pack, or reach the region a dungeon or hunting ground sits in, then finish the last stretch overland or by Gate Travel. A ticket only carries you city to city; where you go from the stable is up to your own two feet, your mount, or a gate.

Where each city's Flight Stable sits is best learned on the ground. The world is meant to be explored, and finding the stables is part of learning your way around.

Ships & Tortuga

The water is its own way to travel. Ships carry you and your cargo across the open sea, which is a whole system of its own - sailing, storms, shallow water and sportfishing all live on the Ships & Sea page. Two things to keep in mind out there: every tile of ocean is lawless, so travel by sea is never entirely safe, and Tortuga can only be reached by boat - there is no gate or flight shortcut to the pirate isle.

Mounts & Flight

Mounts are the everyday way to cover ground faster, and Perilous Legends goes further than horses. There are flying mounts that carry you over the world under your own power, and even a sea mount for crossing water. The full lineup is on the Mounts & Flight page.
