The Installer
One installer, one sign-in, and the launcher does the rest. Here is exactly what happens from download to standing in the world.
Overview
There are three parts to getting in: download the installer, run it, then sign in and let the launcher patch. After that you make your character and play.
Get the Installer
During Alpha the download is a single file named PerilousLegends-Setup.exe. The current, correct link is shared where it can be kept up to date: in the Discord and by email to playtesters. Grab the current one from Discord or perilouslegends.com, and never trust a copy from anywhere else. Beta onward the installer will be available on the main webpage.
Run the Installer
Double-click PerilousLegends-Setup.exe and click through it. A few things to expect:
- It installs into your Program Files folder and creates desktop and Start Menu shortcuts, plus an entry in Add/Remove Programs so you can uninstall cleanly later.
- Windows asks for permission once during install. The app is not code-signed yet, so you may see "unknown publisher" - that is expected for now.
- If Windows SmartScreen throws up a blue "protected your PC" screen, click More info → Run anyway. This is the normal warning for an app that has not built up a signing reputation yet.
Sign In & Patch
Launch the game from your new shortcut. The launcher opens first.
- Sign in. Use the sign-in screen (email code or a social login). This login is your account - there is no separate Ultima Online username and password to invent. The server creates your Perilous Legends account for you the first time you sign in.
- Let it patch. On first run the launcher downloads the full client, which is several gigabytes. Give it a stable connection and let it finish. After the first time, it only pulls the small pieces that changed.
- Play. When patching is done, the launcher hands off to the game and Razor (the built-in assistant) attaches on its own.
Sign-in needs WebView2. The login screen uses the Microsoft WebView2 runtime, which ships with Windows 10 and 11. If your login screen is blank, installing or updating Microsoft Edge / WebView2 fixes it.
Your First Character
The first time you log in, your account is empty, so the game drops you straight onto the character-creation screen. Build your one character there. Remember that Perilous Legends is a one account, one character shard - see Character Creation for the details and the New Player Guide for what to do next.
If Something Goes Wrong
Most install trouble is one of these:
- "Could not reach the update server." Usually a temporary hiccup - let it retry, or close the launcher and open it again.
- A fresh install stalls partway through the big download. Very large files can drop on an unreliable connection or get throttled by antivirus on an unsigned app. If the patcher will not finish, check Discord for pinned links to the browser full-client download, which is more forgiving of flaky connections.
- Do not reinstall or hand-edit files to "fix" a patch. The launcher is designed to heal itself on the next run. If it is stuck, report it in Discord rather than deleting things.
